About P.L.A.Y. Inc.
The People for Leisure And Youth, Inc.
Who We Are
Formed in 1997, the People for Leisure And Youth, Inc. (P.L.A.Y. Inc.) was established to aid in funding innovative recreation and parks services and programs offered in the Santa Maria Valley.
P.L.A.Y. Inc. is a non-profit public benefit corporation committed to promoting public welfare and education through recreation and leisure programs. A volunteer Board of Directors meet quarterly to discuss P.L.A.Y. Inc.’s state of affairs. All decisions must be voted on and approved by the Board.
What We Do
Since P.L.A.Y. Inc. was founded in 1997, over $600,000 has been raised through grant funding and private donations. Some of our major contributors include the Santa Barbara Foundation, Bradley Square Partnership, Coca Cola Bottling Company, Rabobank (formerly Mid-State Bank), WalMart and many more large and small organizations.
Major Achievements:

Developed fund for Los Flores Ranch Park.

Purchased the “Rec and Roll” portable stage for the City of Santa Maria Rec &
Parks Department.

Purchased new playground equipment for Atkinson Park, along with other parks in
the City of Santa Maria.

Developed the Jean Hagerman scholarship fund which provides various
recreation scholarships for low-income families.

Secured funding for trees planted throughout Santa Maria.

Funded “music education” event for hundreds of children in 2009.

Secured funding for the Santa Maria "Come Out and P.L.A.Y. Inc." mobile
recreation unit. The unit "traveled" to different sites throughout the city,
offering portable recreation stations for school-age children.

Ann Batterson
Ann Batterson is the president of the P.L.A.Y. Inc. Board of Directors. She is also a past City of Santa Maria Recreation and Parks Department Commissioner. Mrs. Batterson is the owner of Batterson Graphics and has worked as a graphics designer for the past 20 years. She has been a resident of Santa Maria since 1956 and has participated in many recreation and parks department programs from childhood through adulthood. Mrs. Batterson is “fortunate that our city is able to provide so many opportunities for our residents through the Recreation and Parks Department.” P.L.A.Y. Inc. gives me an opportunity to further support the Recreation and Parks Department. Mrs. Batterson has a husband of 34 years and one daughter with locally based grandchildren. |

Alex Posada
Alex Posada has been a member of the staff at the Recreation and Parks Department since 1977. He has also been the Director of Recreation and Parks for the past 12 years. Previous positions held include of Recreation Specialist, Recreation Supervisor and Interim Recreation Superintendent. Mr. Posada is an active member of the community serving as a Trustee for the Santa Barbara Foundation, past board member and volunteer for the American Red Cross, People for Leisure and Youth President, and serves as the Area Director of the local Special Olympics Program. A member of Kiwanis International for over 20 years, Mr. Posada has served in various positions including President. Mr. Posada has an educational background in Social Work and Public Administration. He has been a speaker at the California Park and Recreation Society Conference and has been locally recognized for his community service by the Chamber of Commerce, VTC Enterprises, Latino Today, and the American Red Cross. |

Sandi Johnson
Sandra Garrison Johnson is a retired teacher and administrator. Mrs. Johnson was principal of Rice and Miller Elementary Schools. She became Coordinator of Program Operations in 1984 adminstered programs such as the G.A.T.E. program, Gifted and Talented Education, Reading Specialist Programs, Healthy Start, Instrumental Music, Nurses, Health Aides, and Kindergarten Curriculum.
She was born in Akron, Ohio and graduated from Kent State University with a BA in Education. She came to Santa Maria to teach in 1961 and completed a Masters in Education at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo in 1975. Mrs. Johnson married Gary Johnson a native of Santa Maria. They have two adult sons and five grandchildren.
Mrs. Johnson is also on the Santa Barbara County Reorganization Committee and the Santa Maria Country Club Women’s Division. She was also a member of Delta Gamma Social Sorority, Delta Kappa Gamma Educational Fraternity. Past board member affiliations include the Santa Maria Symphony, the Santa Barbara Foundation, the Santa Maria Arts Council, the California Retired Teachers and the California Schools Administrators, |

Terri Harris
Terri Harris is currently the audit and accounting manager at Lapp, Fatch, Myers & Gallagher since 1997. Mrs. Harris has B.S. with Honors in Business Administration with an accounting concentration from California Polytechnic State University. She is also a board member of the California Society of Certified Public Accountants and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. |

Ken George
Ken George has been a resident of Santa Maria since 1987. Mr. George retired from the Santa Maria Police Department in May 2008 after serving as a patrol officer, patrol and narcotics sergeant, lieutenant and the police chief at Allan Hancock College. He is a veteran of the armed forces, serving in the Marines from 1976-1980. Mr. George is an active volunteer and event coordinator with the Law Enforcement Torch Run, raising money and awareness for Special Olympics. He currently serves on the Recreation and Parks Commission for the City of Santa Maria. He has been married to Cheryl for 29 years. Two daughters; Kimberly, 22, and a senior at Hope University and Tiffany, 25, married to Timothy Lanier, missionaries with New Tribes, serving in Papua New Guinea. They have three children, Noah, Micah and Anna. |

Frank Ortiz
Frank Ortiz has served 33 years in the fire service and 13 years as fire chief for the City of Santa Maria, Chief Frank Ortiz retired from service in September of 2009. He began his career with the Woodbridge Fire District in 1976, and later was hired as a firefighter by the City of Lodi in 1977. During this time he was a fire science instructor for the Lodi Unified School District and was involved in firefighter recruit training. He promoted through the ranks in Lodi over the course of 19 years, attaining the rank of division chief of operations in 1995. In 1997, Ortiz was appointed fire chief for the City of Santa Maria, where he served until retirement.
A community oriented person; he continues to be an active member of the Rotary Club of Santa Maria Breakfast. During his term as Club President in 2003-2004, the Club was recognized as the outstanding service club for Rotary District 5240. In that same year, his Club was recognized with distinguished service awards from the City Recreation & Parks Commission, and Santa Barbara County C.A.S.A. (Court Appointed Special Advocates). As the general chairperson, representing Rotary in the Santa Maria Valley, a partnership was formed with the City Recreation and Parks Department to develop a 14-acre park site, now called Rotary Centennial Park. This project was recognized as a Helen Putnam Award winner for 2007 from the League of California Cities. Ortiz completed a six-year term as a member of the Board of Directors for the American Red Cross of Santa Barbara County, and in 2003, was presented with their prestigious Clara Barton Volunteer Leadership award. Most recently in 2009, he was honored as the Rotarian of the Year in District 5240, which encompasses 72 Rotary Clubs and over 3,700 members. Frank and his wife, Scottie, are major donors to The Rotary International Foundation.
In retirement, he continues to teach Company Officer and Chief Officer level courses for California State Fire Training, as well as Ethical Leadership in the Classroom. He also serves as a part-time faculty professor at Allan Hancock College |

Terri Zuniga
Terri has been a lifelong resident of the Santa Maria Valley. She and her husband of 30 years have raised 7 children and are the proud grandparents of 11 grandchildren. Terri, her children and now her grandchildren have participated and experienced directly the value of the many and varied programs and services offered by the Recreation and Parks Department.
As a former Recreation and Parks Commissioner Terri is looking forward as a Board member of P.L.A.Y. to continuing her efforts to support the staff and Administration of the Department as they work to maintain and grow the valuable programs offered to the community.
Terri spent 20 years in the non-profit arena as Director of Programs for Domestic Violence Solutions and has been the Supervisor of the District Attorney’s Office Victim Witness Program for the past 6 years. Her commitment to serving families and working to improve her community is a passion that has driven her service on many committees, boards, and community organizations. |
